GlobeDocs Presents:

EMPTY SACRED SPACES

VIRTUAL DISCUSSION

In the current pandemic, religious congregants of different faiths are separated from their sacred spaces. Six different faiths are in the midst of major festivals, religious holidays and religious rites. 'Empty Sacred Spaces' provides thoughtful reflections by American preachers of these faiths while providing a window into these empty spaces that are otherwise bustling with life and activity. Watch as director, Amina Chaudary, along with subjects in the short film, discuss the film in a conversation moderated by The Boston Globe's Felicia Gans.

Watch the short film here.

About the Short

Christians are in the midst of Lent, which culminates in a few days with Easter. Muslims will begin fasting the month of Ramadan in less than two weeks. Jews are now globally observing Passover. Chaitra Navratri, a Hindu festival of nine days, ended a few days ago. The Sikh holiday Vaisakhi falls every year in the middle of April. The Buddha’s birthday also just passed, and is a large and global celebration.

These festive occasions are intrinsically associated with the communal gathering of worshipers. But this year, the ability to come together will be significantly altered. While visiting several sacred worship places of various faiths, the film features buildings, otherwise bustling with activity, empty amid this global pandemic. Watch conversations with a Buddhist monk, a Muslim Imam, a Hindu priest, a Jewish Cantor, a Christian pastor and a Sikh priest that highlight importance of their efforts to find new ways to connect to their religious communities and to minister to them in a way that provides some sense of familiarity. They also offered wisdom in light of the present pandemic.
